From ESL/GED to Medical School:
A Journey of Perseverance.
How a Second Chance Became the Key to Achieving My Lifelong Dream
Imagine your lifelong dream slipping away until three letters gave it breath again: GED. Without that second chance, becoming a physician would have faded into a dream lost. Instead, that second chance became the bedrock of everything, carrying me all the way to medical school.
My dream of becoming a physician was born amidst the rubble of the Haiti earthquake, when I saw both hope and healing were urgently needed. When I moved to the U.S., I found myself without a voice in a language I did not yet speak, and my diploma could not carry me forward. Yet, my dream refused to fade. The GED became my only bridge, and I walked across it with purpose.
Earning that GED was more than a test; it was the turning point where I took ownership of my story. Each subject I tackled was not just a lesson; it was proof that effort leads to progress. Every late night of studying reminded me that, no matter how far I was from my goal, I could take one more step. Passing that exam was not just an academic win; it was a declaration that I had the strength to rebuild my future. Each step forward I was learning resilience, discipline, and self-belief. I realized that where we start does not dictate where we end up. I knew then that every dream is built step by step with intention. From that moment I understood my future was not a distant dream; it was something I was actively creating, one decision, one milestone, one step closer every day.
That second chance did not just get me back on track; it gave me the grit to keep going. I pursued further education with the same determination, and each step forward, through college into medical school, was built on that foundation. Now, as a medical student, I carry that same persistence, knowing every obstacle was a step toward my calling.
Whether you are pursuing your GED now or consider taking a next step, know this: your path is alive. A second chance is a powerful new start. Wherever you begin from, the next step is within your reach. Your dream is not distant; it is waiting for you to step forward and make it yours.
